🗣️ A Legacy of Leadership: Dr. Jerome Harris Reflects on Atlanta’s Educational Journey

By Mark Arnold | Let’s Talk ATL & The ATL Now | Meeting of the Minds Series

In a rare and poignant conversation, Let’s Talk ATL and The ATL Now had the honor of sitting down with Dr. Jerome Harris, the 94-year-old retired former Superintendent of Atlanta Public Schools, whose tenure and legacy continue to shape the city’s educational landscape. Hosted by Mark Arnold as part of the Meeting of the Minds series, the interview offered a masterclass in leadership, resilience, and civic responsibility.

Dr. Harris, whose career caused transformation in Atlanta’s public education system, spoke candidly about the challenges and triumphs of his time in office. From navigating desegregation and equity reforms to championing student-centered policies, his insights were both sobering and inspiring.

“We weren’t just building schools—we were building futures,” Dr. Harris said, his voice steady with conviction. “Atlanta’s children deserved more than access. They deserved excellence.”

📚 A Superintendent Ahead of His Time

Appointed during a pivotal era, Dr. Harris led APS through some of its most complex transitions. Under his leadership, the district saw increased graduation rates, expanded arts and vocational programs, and a renewed focus on community engagement. He was also known for his fierce advocacy for teacher development and his belief that education was the cornerstone of civic progress.

Mark Arnold, whose work continues to spotlight Atlanta’s cultural and civic leaders, guided the conversation with warmth and precision, drawing out reflections that felt both personal and historic.

“Dr. Harris didn’t just lead a school system—he led a movement,” Arnold noted. “His story is Atlanta’s story.”

🏛️ Wisdom for the Next Generation

Now in his 90s, Dr. Harris remains a sharp observer of today’s educational climate. He expressed hope in the new generation of educators and emphasized the importance of mentorship, equity, and innovation.

“We must teach our children to think critically, act compassionately, and lead courageously,” he said. “That’s how we build a better Atlanta.”

🎙️ Meeting of the Minds: Bridging Past and Future

This interview marks a cornerstone in the Meeting of the Minds series—an initiative designed to connect Atlanta’s thought leaders across generations and disciplines. By spotlighting voices like Dr. Harris’s, the series aims to preserve institutional memory while inspiring forward-thinking dialogue.

As the cameras faded and the conversation drew to a close, one thing was clear: Dr. Jerome Harris’s legacy is not just etched in policy or buildings—it lives on in the hearts of those who believe in the power of public education to transform lives.
